Caring for rattan
Rattan is a natural material with a warm, lived-in character. With simple care, it will age beautifully and last for many years.
Everyday care
-
Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment.
-
For light cleaning, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth.
-
Always dry thoroughly after cleaning.
Deep cleaning (occasional)
-
Use a mild soap diluted in water.
-
Wipe gently — never soak.
-
Allow the piece to air dry completely in a well-ventilated space.
Avoid harsh detergents, abrasive sponges, or chemical cleaners, as these can weaken the fibres.
Moisture & humidity
Rattan is sensitive to excess moisture.
-
Do not leave rattan items outdoors uncovered during rain.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to very damp environments.
-
If used outside, place in a covered or sheltered area.
Too much moisture can cause fibres to soften or lose shape.
Sunlight & heat
-
Avoid constant direct sunlight, which can dry out and fade the material.
-
Keep away from heaters, fireplaces, or radiators.
Natural rattan may subtly change colour over time — this is part of its character.
Preventing dryness
In very dry climates, rattan can become brittle.
-
Occasionally mist lightly with water (do not soak).
-
This helps maintain flexibility in the fibres.
Weight & use
-
Rattan is strong but lightweight.
-
Avoid standing on rattan furniture or placing excessive weight on shelves or baskets.
Storage
If storing rattan items:
-
Keep them in a dry, ventilated space
-
Avoid plastic covers — breathable fabric is better
A note on natural variation
Rattan is a natural material. Variations in colour, texture, and weave are normal and part of what makes each piece unique.
With thoughtful care, rattan develops a beautiful patina and remains a functional, timeless part of the home.
