Caring for rattan

Rattan is a natural material with a warm, lived-in character. With simple care, it will age beautifully and last for many years.

Everyday care

  • Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment.

  • For light cleaning, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth.

  • Always dry thoroughly after cleaning.

Deep cleaning (occasional)

  • Use a mild soap diluted in water.

  • Wipe gently — never soak.

  • Allow the piece to air dry completely in a well-ventilated space.

Avoid harsh detergents, abrasive sponges, or chemical cleaners, as these can weaken the fibres.

Moisture & humidity

Rattan is sensitive to excess moisture.

  • Do not leave rattan items outdoors uncovered during rain.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to very damp environments.

  • If used outside, place in a covered or sheltered area.

Too much moisture can cause fibres to soften or lose shape.

Sunlight & heat

  • Avoid constant direct sunlight, which can dry out and fade the material.

  • Keep away from heaters, fireplaces, or radiators.

Natural rattan may subtly change colour over time — this is part of its character.

Preventing dryness

In very dry climates, rattan can become brittle.

  • Occasionally mist lightly with water (do not soak).

  • This helps maintain flexibility in the fibres.

Weight & use

  • Rattan is strong but lightweight.

  • Avoid standing on rattan furniture or placing excessive weight on shelves or baskets.

Storage

If storing rattan items:

  • Keep them in a dry, ventilated space

  • Avoid plastic covers — breathable fabric is better
